A team of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) students successfully launched three nanosatellites on Thursday afternoon through SA-born Elon Musk's SpaceX.

The constellation of satellites will help improve South Africa’s maritime surveillance.

The Flash Drive's Carl Wastie spoke with Nyameko Royi of the French South African Institute of Technology, Cape Peninsula University of Technology ahead of the launch of the CPUT MDASat 1.

There was a time whereby we didn't really put much effort into looking at our ocean or coastal economy.

If we get to track the ships whereby... we can see their destination, direction of travel, the speed... that is the main goal.
