It has been an interesting week over at the Suez Canal following the stranding of the container ship. Ever Given.

The ship was en route from Tanjung Plepas to Rotterdam when a strong wind caused the hull to deviate from the waterway and hitting the bottom.

The Ever Given ended up with its bow wedged in one bank of the canal with stern almost touching the other.

The "accident" saw hundreds of container ships stranded as they could not pass through the canal. The alternate would be to pass past Cape Town, but this would be a rather expensive exercise.

But thanks to 14 tugboats the ship has now been freed.

Carl Wastie spoke to the Vice President of the International Salvage Union and Senior Salvage Master at Resolve Marine Group, Captain Nic Sloane to find out how a salvage operation works.
