It was the move from the township of Umlazi in Kwa-Zulu Natal to Johannesburg, the city of bright lights, hustlers and ambition that open Fund Manager, Zama Khanyile's eyes to the opportunities available to black people and ignited a spark of passion in her.

Accountancy was an accidental choice — when it came time to choose a course of study, Zama settled on an accounting-based business bridging course and, despite not having studied accounting at school, she fell head over heels in love with numbers.

A word of advice to young professionals

Navigating a path within the corporate world was a balancing act for Zama. Her solid foundation of respect and ability to visualise herself in a successful career as a Fund Manager aided her growth and helped manifest those dreams into a reality.

Her advice to young professionals looking to establish meaningful careers: "One of the lessons that I learned early in my career is, you can be excellent but if people don't know how excellent you are, they'll never pick you for opportunities. So, you need to learn to strike a balance without being overly full of yourself but to be able to sell who you are, what you care about, what you're capable of and what you have achieved."

Spending habits: The good, the bad and all the lessons Zama has learnt about money

As a professional who understands the value of money, Zama believes that money is a means to something and not a measure of anything. She believes in being mindful of attaining money and creating wealth for the next generation. She shares tips on how you can create positive financial habits.
