There are now 14,944 active cases of Covid-19, with a total of 52,178 confirmed cases and 37,234 recoveries.

These figures are according to the Western Cape Health Department's latest Covid-19 statistics.

The term "active case" refers to a patient who is currently infected. A case is considered closed when a person has recovered, or in the event of a death.

As the Western Cape moves closer to its peak, provincial health authorities are recording over 1,000 new Covid-19 cases daily.

A total of 274,649 tests have been conducted in the Western Cape to date.

Premier Alan Winde says diabetes, HIV, and hypertension are the top three comorbidities associated with Covid-19 deaths in the province.

He says that the majority of people who have become seriously ill have been over the age of 55 or have one or more comorbidities.
