The Baxter Theatre has appealed to theatre lovers to “Buy the Baxter a cup of coffee every month,” at just R30 per month - to help keep their doors open.

The theatre is seeking 30,000 donors over the next year.

To raise awareness around the fundraising campaign, the theatre enlisted the help of local celebrities dubbed the #BaxterCoffeeAngels.

Kfm's Sunday Breakfast host Saskia Falken interviewed Comedian and #BaxterCoffeeAngels ambassador Marc Lottering, about the theatre's fundraising initiative.

The Baxter had a double knock, because just before we all realized that the coronavirus was a reality they were called in by UCT - UCT basically gave them a third of their funding every year - and they were called in by UCT to say that this was simply no longer affordable because the university itself needed every cent.

The Baxter has come up with this campaign... The only way they are going to survive, to keep their doors open, is if they get people who love theatre, if people donate R30 per month to The Baxter Theatre... It would effectively make the theatre sustainable...

Marc Lottering, Comedian and #BaxterCoffeeAngels ambassador

It's R30 to buy a cup of coffee, so basically if you can pledge to give the Baxter R30 every month, they would that from 30,000 people...

... for all Capetonians - and people outside of Cape Town as well - but specifically Capetonians, this is where people meet, this is where people have come to watch comedy, this is where people have come to watch music...

Marc Lottering, Comedian and #BaxterCoffeeAngels ambassador

... there's no state funding, there's no wealthy person putting money into the venue every month, so it's such an important venue for Capetonians and for all of us as performers...
