A large waist circumference and a difficulty in shifting belly fat could be an indicator of low testosterone levels, according to a review by The Endocrine Aspects of Male Sexual Dysfunctions Committee.
According to Bayer South Africa, men’s testosterone levels begin a steady decline from the time that they hit middle age. Around the same time, many men find that no matter how much they exercise or how strictly they diet, they struggle to get rid of the excess weight carried around the stomach area.
The decline in testosterone levels is also linked to metabolic syndrome, which raises the risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke, according to research by the US's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
A large waist circumference isn't the only symptom of low testosterone.
A feeling of being permanently fatigued, experiencing sleep disturbances or a dip in libido and a lack of spontaneous erections could all point to low testosterone levels, and warrants a visit to the doctor for a blood test, recommends Bayer Southern Africa.
If the patient's testosterone levels are found to be low, careful testosterone replacement therapy, managed by a medical professional, may be prescribed.
Testosterone deficiencies are not reserved for the middle-aged. Younger men - particularly those with a waist circumference of 102cm or more or the symptoms listed above - should also have their testosterone levels checked.
