What do you do when the diagnostic equipment you need to help avoid brain damage in children is too expensive?

You invent a cheaper alternative, which is exactly what SA doctor Llewlellyn Padayachy did.

The MRI and CAT scan machines at Red Cross Children's Hospitals have long waiting lists. This means that children who potentially have illnesses that cause brain swelling would have to wait too long to be diagnosed.

The danger is that, if the illness is not caught quickly enough, irreparable brain damage can occur.

His solution? Take ultrasound machines, which are available in almost every clinic, and modify them to give doctors all the information they need to treat their young patients as quickly as possible.
