Ryan O' Connor caught up with Ryan Stramrood from Mad Swimmer this morning.
'Mad Swimmer' is a big group of brave individuals who embark on annual challenges, swimming between the worlds seven continents. A great and daring initiative to raise funds for children and orphanages across the Cape. Mad Swimmer is a registered charity and this year the team will be a attempting their sixth inter-continent crossing!
Ryan Stramrood along with his fellow swimmers have accepted their next challenge. They will be fighting the brain freeze headaches, and will swim from America to Russia to raise their next donation for a childrens home.
Ryan expressed the pain he feels when jumping into an ocean of freezing water which reaches a temperature of four degrees celsius. A bold act indeed, not for the faint hearted!
In preparation for this challenge, Ryan swims from Robben Island to Blouberg daily. He sacrifices the pain by taking the plunge of jumping into a big tub of ice blocks. He explains that to prepare oneself, you need to prepare the body and mind, because in these extreme temperatures the body goes into shock and one needs to stay focussed and not panic.
Ryan leaves on Friday to begin his journey, we wish him well and give thanks to his bravery and support of our country.
